The Journey to Becoming an Instructor

I started teaching in the 90’s, yep that’s right; it’s been over 20 years.  I figured while getting my undergrad at Iowa and being a poor college student, it made more sense to get a free membership by teaching, getting paid doing something I love, and meeting wonderful people along the way.

Get to know Dawn

I am a mother of three beautiful children, a nine-year-old son, and five-year-old boy/girl twins.  I started my own private practice in Iowa City almost five years ago as a Licensed Independent Social Worker providing mental and behavioral health counseling to children, adults, and families.

When you aren’t at work, where are you?

I’m enjoying my family time with three rambunctious children and patient husband.

What is your dream vacation?

Hawaii will always be my home away from home.  Not only was I proposed to there, we got married there September 29, 2006.

Tell us something surprising about yourself.

My three children were all conceived on the same day…on my anniversary.  I’m also the youngest daughter of nine children from Solon, and the first generation to get my college degree in which I paid for myself.

Would you rather?

-Would you rather never lose your phone again or never lose your keys again?  Never lose my keys.

-Would you rather face your fears or forget that you have them?  Face my fears

-Would you rather never be stuck in traffic again or never have another cold?  Never be stuck in traffic again

-Would you rather take a cold shower or sleep an hour less than you need to be fully rested?  Sleep an hour less

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor:

After struggling with chronic illness for years, I began attending the gym in 2014.  I wanted to do everything I could to be strong for my husband and children.  In the last few years I have seen how having a regular fitness routine has improved so many aspects of my life – weight, tone, mood, marriage, parenting, etc.  A friend of mine encouraged me to become an instructor.   I decided to become a fitness instructor because I wanted to encourage others to make positive changes in their lives.  I have been certified in BodyStep since February 2017 and BodyPump since April 2017.  I love the strength and toning that comes from doing BodyPump, and the cardio burn from BodyStep is amazing.  I love group fitness because it lets everyone encourage and uplift those around them.  Building relationships with those in my classes brings me so much joy.  I’m originally from the Iowa City area, and have spent most of my life here.  I have been married to my husband, Matt, for 10 years, and we have two children, Eva and Daniel.  We enjoy spending time together as a family, being active, watching sports, and playing games. I love working out, reading, spending time with family and friends, and cooking.

Get to know Jacque:

When you aren’t at work, where are you?

When I’m not perfecting my skills as a domestic engineer, you can find me listening to business and leadership development podcasts, reading, or practicing for Pump and Step.

Tell us something surprising about yourself?

I learned how to shoot a bow and arrow when I was 4 years old, and continued with it until I began having children.  It was a great way to spend one on one time with my dad. Some of my fondest memories are of him and me tromping through the parks of Iowa at 3D archery competitions.

What is your dream vacation?

My dream vacation will last approximately two months and include time spent in New Zealand, Australia, Scotland, and Italy.

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor:

In high school, I did track basketball, and volleyball. I continued to play basketball in college. In order to be in the best shape I was always exercising to be ready for the next season. I grew to love exercising because it made me feel happy. I would get up in the early hours of the morning to exercise with my Dad or my sisters. When I finished playing sports, I continued to exercise 4 or 5 times a week. It became a natural part of my life. When I was getting an education at Brigham Young University, I took a few aerobics classes that I loved. I decided I wanted to become an aerobics instructor. We moved to Iowa so that my husband could continue his education at the University. There were many opportunities for me to learn to become an aerobics instructor. I started teaching at the University 2 years ago and then I decided to join Core Fitness this year. I love exercising and accomplishing hard goals that I set for myself. I love being an instructor because I can share my exercise passion with others.

Get to know Michelle:

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I would like to get from one place to another in a blink of an eye. Then I could travel the world.

What is your guilty pleasure? Watching cheesy chick flicks alone.

What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy doing crafts, knitting, reading, hiking, playing sports, and learning new skills.

What is your favorite exercise? I like doing a variety of workouts but if I had to say one, it would be running. I LOVE running.

If you were stranded on an island, who would you want to be stranded with and what 5 things would you want to have with you? Hands down my husband and son.

Would you rather:

Watch TV or read a book? Read a book

Have a night out or evening in? A night out

Go climbing or zip line? Neither, I am terrified of heights

Camp in an RV or stay in a tent? Real camping? Stay in a tent.

Play dodgeball or kickball? Dodgeball

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor:

Fifteen years ago, I took a freestyle step class and fell in love with the joy and energy of group fitness! I have always been very athletic, but I didn’t know a workout could be combined with entertainment and group connection. I have never had stage fright or a fear of public speaking—I’ve always loved being on stage! I realized that teaching group fitness was a wonderful opportunity for me to combine two things I am passionate about: exercise, and helping people have a good time while learning and getting healthier and stronger!

I started out teaching freestyle step and toning. Later I took my first yoga class and realized the incredible, life-changing benefits of regular practice. I eventually obtained my yoga and Pilates certifications so I could help others practice safe posture and alignment during movement. Then about ten years ago, I took my first Les Mills BODYPUMP class. I barbell weight training was the piece of fitness I had been missing. Training with weights made me so much stronger than I ever realized I could be! I also quickly discovered the excellence of Les Mills programs, which are painstakingly designed with the latest fitness science and expertise. A year ago, I finally decided to take the plunge and become a certified BODYPUMP, BODYSTEP, and LESMILLS TONE instructor.

In the future I plan to take advanced instructor training for Les Mills programs as well as yoga. I love continuing to learn so I can keep offering my participants new knowledge and inspiration! My journey as a fitness instructor has truly been one of the most rewarding and enriching endeavors I have been blessed to experience. I love watching people grow stronger and more confident, all while having fun! I hope to keep teaching group fitness for many decades to come.

Get to know Sadie:

If you could have a super power, what would it be? Between kids, school, and work, I dream about being able to exist without sleep!

What is your guilty pleasure? Sugar!! I’m usually very strict with sticking to a Paleo/clean diet, but I have to indulge the occasional splurge. My favorite is the Nutella crème brulee at Basta.

What do you like to do in your free time? What is this mysterious thing called “free time,” and where can I find some?

What is your favorite exercise? BODYSTEP!! It’s just such a fun and comprehensive workout!

If you were stranded on an island, who would you want to be stranded with and what 5 things would you want to have with you? I would want to be stranded with my husband and kids, of course! I’d have to have weightlifting/exercise equipment, every Les Mills BODYPUMP and BODYSTEP release in existence, Netflix, all my books, and a bed with a high quality king-size mattress.

Would you rather:

Watch TV or read a book? Depends on the show and the book! Probably the book though.

Have a night out or evening in? A night out! I don’t get enough of them anymore!

Go climbing or zip line? Zip line.

Camp in an RV or stay in a tent? The RV all the way.

Play dodgeball or kickball? I like living dangerously, so it would have to be dodgeball.

CORE FITNESS FEATURED INSTRUCTOR – JESSICA DECKER

Class Times
RPM Tuesday 4:30PM Mormon Trek
RPM Wednesday 5:00PM North Liberty
RPM Saturday 7:30AM North Liberty (In the rotation)
RPM Sunday 9AM North Liberty

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor: One year ago I took my first RPM class on day one of my training to become an instructor and I thought I was going to die! It was the hardest yet most rewarding experience of my life. I finished the two day training with so much love for RPM and ready to make a huge change in my life. I went from someone who never worked out and wouldn’t dare stand in front of a bunch of people to coach them in fitness to someone who doesn’t want to go more than a day without working out and has so much more confidence in myself! I love coaching all the members in my classes and pushing them to their limits while I do the same.

Get to know Jessica Decker:

If you could have a super power, what would it be? Mind reading but I’m just so curious all the time 🙂

What is your guilty pleasure? Hiding in the laundry room while eating candy so my son doesn’t ask me to share.

What do you like to do in your free time? Spending time with my husband, son and dogs whether we are hiking at Hickory Hill or just playing hide and seek for the 100th time that day.

What is your favorite exercise? RPM 🙂 I also like the idea of running but I’m really bad at the actual activity!

If you were stranded on an island, who would you want to be stranded with and what 5 things would you want to have with you? My family (husband, son and can’t forget the dogs), Bear Grylls (he would keep us alive), unlimited sunscreen, my toothbrush, and a flashlight (the dark freaks me out).

Would you rather?
– Watch TV or read a book? If Greys Anatomy or This is Us is on then I going to watch TV but give me a good book and I can be content for hours!
– Have a night out or evening in? NIGHT IN! I love staying in with my boys 🙂
– Go climbing or zip line? Either one is pretty awesome but if I had to choose, climbing because I can have more of an adventure.
– Camp in an RV or stay in a tent? I asked my son this question and his response was perfect “oh my mommy don’t sleep outside!” Definitely an RV over a tent.
– Play dodgeball or kickball? Dodgeball!

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor: I started my yoga instructor teacher training in 2016 primarily as a way to expand my treatment options for the clients I work with as a physical therapist. I fell in love with the movement and benefits of yoga and now instruct yoga for both adults and occasionally for my kids and their friends! Also in 2016, I decided to take the plunge at instructing RPM cycling. I love way the mindfulness of yoga complements the intensity of cycling.

My certifications include: RYT-200 (Registered yoga teacher 200 hour) and RPM.

Get to know Kim:

If you could have a super power, what would it be? Healing capabilities

What is your guilty pleasure? Naps…I love taking cuddly naps with my kids. And anything chocolate!

What do you like to do in your free time? Read, spend time outside with my 3 kids and watch them participate in their favorite activities…basketball for my son and gymnastics for my daughter, and anything Thomas the Train for my 2 year old son.

What is your favorite exercise? I really do love all exercise and I enjoy different exercise for different reasons. I love the intensity of a powerful RPM class, I love the results I get with weight lifting and I love how I feel walking out of a good yoga class.

If you were stranded on an island, who would you want to be stranded with and what 5 things would you want to have with you? My family, sunscreen, the Harry Potter series (does that count as 7 things?), food, and my comfy pillow.

Would you rather?
– Watch TV or read a book? Read
– Have a night out or evening in? Evening in
– Go climbing or zip line? Climbing
– Camp in an RV or stay in a tent? RV

This month we are highlighting Molly! Come give one of her class a try this month and see what makes her such an amazing instructor.

BodyPump, Mondays @ 9:00 Mormon Trek Location

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor

Hey all!  I’m Molly, and I’m certified in BodyPump and BodyStep.  I am a pharmacist and mom to two very active girls.  As a healthcare professional, I know how important being physically active is to overall health and quality of life.  I was a participant in group fitness classes for several years before deciding to become an instructor.  I love that BodyPump is great way to build muscle strength, increase metabolism, and improve bone density for overall health.  I’m a huge fan of group fitness because it provides the structure and motivation I need to consistently get a great workout and it’s a lot more fun than doing it on my own!

Get to know Molly

If you could have a super power, what would it be?

Super Organized! (Because, clearly, I’m nowhere close)

What is your guilty pleasure?

Dark Chocolate and Red Wine.  Not necessarily in that order.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Running around with my girls takes up a lot of my free time, but we try to do active things as a family.  We like to hike or take family bike rides.  I do love to cook and wish I had more time to experiment with new recipes.  I love to travel around the country and around the world, although there is only so much time and money for those adventures :).  I have participated in Les Mills classes in several states and even managed to attend in a BodyStep class in Copenhagen!

What is your favorite exercise?

Stepping, hands down.  I love the feeling of a good run (you can do it anywhere), and I know how great lifting weights is for me (and Body Pump targets all those important muscle groups), but I just love to step.  I was one of those people who watched a step class and thought, “that looks fun, but I’m not that coordinated.”  But after sticking with it (despite some falls and awkward moments), it became my favorite way to work up a sweat.  It doesn’t matter if you know every move – just keep moving and have fun!

If you were stranded on an island, who would you want to be stranded with and what 5 things would you want to have with you?

I can’t imagine being stranded without my husband and two girls (ages 10 &12), although I’m pretty sure my kids would prefer to be stranded with just about anyone else after about a week (and probably vice versa).  My husband is pretty resourceful though, so I’m sure he would come in handy.

Five things I would want:

  1. Sunscreen
  2. Bug Spray
  3. Some sort of knife or cutting utensil
  4. Oatmeal
  5. I’d also need a lot of red wine…

Would you rather?

– Watch TV or read a book?

I would like to say read a book – I want to read more, but I always fall of the wagon and don’t finish the book.  I don’t watch a lot of TV, but getting sucked into HGTV or Food Network is a guilty pleasure.

– Have a night out or evening in?

Night out – because I can’t sit at home for too long and I definitely enjoy hanging out with family and friends.  But sometimes you just need a good night at home with your loved ones to just chill and reconnect.

– Go climbing or zip lining?

I’ve done both, and I have to say zip lining.  My kids are apparently part spider monkey and can scramble up a rock face, but I’m not quite that nimble.  Zip lining pushes my comfort zone for sure, but it’s so much fun.

– Camp in an RV or stay in a tent?

Is a hotel an option?!  I’m going to pick tent, because if I’m going to camp, it would be in the backcountry where an RV is not an option.  I love hiking and experiencing so many outdoor activities, but I prefer coming back to a hot shower and a real bed if it’s possible.

– Play dodgeball or kickball?

-Honestly, I have bad memories of both in grade school.  I was small and not considered “athletic,” so getting picked last for a team was a major stressor for me at that age.  Don’t let your past experiences and other peoples’ perceptions of you (or your body size/shape) make feel like group exercise (or any exercise!) is out of your league.  We all deserve a healthy and happy life, so find an activity that works for you and stick with it.  You won’t regret the positive influence being active has on your life and those around you.

Sandy’s Motto – Embrace the sweat!

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor

I have always loved the water and lap swimming. When Core purchased the Mormon Trek location, I tried AquaFit classes and fell in love. I enjoy the ability to workout as hard as you want and burn a load of calories without the joint impact. As I learned more about the benefits of working out in water, I decided to work on getting certified for aqua fitness. I then had the opportunity to become certified in the Water in Motion program as well which allows me to dance to the music as I workout. I encourage all members to try a water class. We are lucky at Core to have many wonderful options to choose from!

Would you rather?

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor

I was an athlete all through high school, so when I got to college I craved intense workouts. There I discovered group fitness! I attended classes daily and eventually was approached with the idea of training to teach Pilates. I taught Pilates for 3 years then took a short break while finishing up school. Now, I am back with BodyFlow and am currently training for BodyCombat. I love working out with a group and enjoy the feeling of mutual accomplishment at the end of a challenging class.

If you could have a super power, what would it be? I would like to be able to fly. I am not a very good traveler – I get terrible motion sickness in the car and in airplanes (I can’t even read off my phone). If I could fly I would be much more open to taking far trips!

What is your guilty pleasure? Various Netflix shows! It is too easy to get caught up and watch multiple episodes. Luckily, my Fitbit buzzes every hour to remind me to move.

What do you like to do in your free time? Whenever I am home, I devote my attention to my two crazy cats, Mica and Coal. My fiance and I like to stay active outside the gym by exploring Iowa with our kayaks and bike riding. I also love to cook and try out new recipes – I am open to suggestions anytime!

What is your favorite exercise? So many to choose from! I love lunges. They make me feel strong and empowered. Plus there are so many variations and intensities with jumping switch lunges, pulses, back and forward, etc.

If you were stranded on an island, who would you want to be stranded with and what 5 things would you want to have with you? Don’t tell my fiance, but I would want to be stranded with my dad. He is always prepared and is such a survivor! I am not very good at these types of questions because I am too practical… I would want:

1) Water purifying tablets

2) Sunscreen

3) Tarps

4) Protein bars

5) A compass!

Would you rather?

– Watch TV or read a book? Read a book.

– Have a night out or evening in? Evening in.

– Go climbing or zip lining? Zip lining, though both scare me a bit.

– Camp in an RV or stay in a tent? Stay in a tent.

– Play dodgeball or kickball? Kickball

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor

Fitness has always been a big part of my life. I’ve always loved to run, but since moving to Iowa 3 years ago I’ve developed a love for group fitness classes. About a year ago, a friend encouraged me to do a Les Mills training for BodyAttack. Over the course of the last year, I’ve added Sprint class, as well as Fit Kids. I love sharing my love and passion for fitness with others!

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor

I fell in love with Zumba and group fitness about 5 years ago. When I moved back to Coralville to start my Spanish teaching job 2 years ago I started taking classes again and was asked to get my instructor certificate. It was a wonderful opportunity that I could not pass up, and I have been fortunate enough to have been teaching amazing students ever since! I love that Zumba encourages passion, movement, and individuality. Most of all, it is FUN!

I want to make a personal investment in my fitness while helping others meet their fitness goals. Over the past 5 years, I consistently challenged myself and exceed goals that I never dreamed I would accomplish. Fitness has taught me the powerful statement: “The Mind Achieves What the Mind Believes.” Since I have become a Les Mills Grit and CXWorx Certified Instructor, I make a daily goal to provide the participants in my class the most fun, yet challenging workout every class.

The Journey to Becoming an Instructor

My next door neighbor was a water aerobics instructor and basically just asked me to take over when she moved. I was horrible! I recorded tapes from the radio like the Grease soundtrack. I had no choreography or thought behind my workouts. That was 23 years ago though, and here I am, 23 years later!

Get to know Andrea

If you could have a super power, what would it be? If I had a super power, it would be that of supreme convincibility. To get anyone to do whatever I ask. It would make getting my kids teeth brushed at night so much easier!

What is your guilty pleasure? My guilty pleasure… so many! Flo Rida. Also, really bad, “b” horror movies. American Horror story. Lindt Truffles.

What do you like to do in your free time? In my free time, I like to read, educate myself, chill out outside with a cup of coffee, and teach my kids important things in life, like how to ride a bike, or to really look at the color of leaves, or how to best catch lady bugs.

If you had one wish, what would it be? One wish would be that there would be no terminal illness.

What is your favorite exercise? My favorite exercise… hmmmm… BodyCombat is my favorite class. I’m working on a handstand push-up and one day I’ll do it! I love to lift shoulders, but I have a hard time picking just one exercise.
